Brooking takes West Ham post

Trevor Brooking is joining West Ham as a non-executive director.

Although he is not being given the title of director of football, he will work closely with the newly-appointed manager, Glenn Roeder.

Brooking, one of the Upton Park club's favourite sons, will divide his time between the new job and his duties as chairman of Sport England, plus his role as a BBC football expert.

His appointment will be welcomed by fans, many of whom are sceptical of Roeder's credentials.

Brooking, 52, made a total of 622 League and Cup appearances for West Ham in a career spanning almost 20 years.

He said: "I'm obviously flattered and honoured to be the first former player to be invited on to the board. I'll be pleased to reflect the views of the fans and do my best to help the club move forward to its next stage of development.

"Naturally, from the chairman's point of view and with the size of the business, someone with a football background is important as a link between the training ground and boardroom."

Chairman Terry Brown said: "I'm delighted that Trevor has agreed to join the board. His vast knowledge of West Ham, its culture and history and his immense football experience make him uniquely qualified."

He added: "It is vital we realise our potential and I am certain Trevor's appointment will go a long way to ensuring that happens."

Brooking's appointment was also heartily endorsed by Roeder. He said: "When the chairman first told me about Trevor, I was a hundred per cent behind the idea.

"I'm sure Trevor will prove a great help to me and the club at all levels and I'm looking forward to working with such a highly-respected football personality."
