Brooking's life and talents

14 April 2012

Throughout his life Trevor Brooking has been as versatile off the pitch as he was on it with West Ham and England.

PLAYER

Brooking made 635 appearances and scored 102 goals in a 17-year career with West Ham up to 1984. He was also an England regular, playing his last game against Spain in the 1982 World Cup.

BROADCASTER

An articulate football pundit, he joined the BBC commentary team in 1985 and has since become a prominent figure in both their television and radio coverage. He has commentated on World Cups, FA Cup finals and England internationals.

ADMINISTRATOR

He was made chairman of the Eastern Region Council for Sport and Recreation in 1987, a post he held for 10 years. He then spent four years as chairman of funding body, Sport England.

DIRECTOR

Brooking was appointed to the West Ham board as an non-executive director in 2001 and remains hugely popular with fans. He has emerged as a mediator.

MANAGER

Following Glenn Roeder's illness last season, Brooking became West Ham's caretaker manager for the final three games. Results improved and he nearly saved the club from relegation. He took on the same job following Roeder's sacking this season.

BUSINESSMAN

He is part-owner of a successful Stratfordbased bookbinding business which he started during his playing days.
