Brooks Koepka wants world No1 status to be long term

Newly-crowned world No1 Brooks Koepka has warned his golfing rivals his best is yet to come.

The American took over top spot for the first time after winning the CJ Cup in South Korea last week and lines up at this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai as the man to beat.

This year’s US Open and US PGA winner said: “The way I’m playing right now, I feel like I can win anywhere. I don’t feel like I’ve peaked. I feel like I can get a lot better, you can always improve.”

Koepka joked that he had yet to feel the pressure of his No1 status, down to the fact, “I’ve only been world No1 for three days and I haven’t found too many challenges in those days”.

As for that newly-acquired mantle, he insists he has no intention of giving it up.

“I’m looking to build on that lead, grow up and that way I can be No1 for a while,” he said. “The goal isn’t just to get here, it’s to stay here.”
