Brown knocks records for six

Brian Scovell13 April 2012

Alistair Brown, seemingly no longer in the running when it comes to England's one-day squad, smashed a world record 268 off only 160 balls as he and Surrey ran riot against Glamorgan in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy at The Oval today.

On the day the selectors ignored him for the forthcoming NatWest series, Brown broke Graeme Pollock's world record of 222, eclipsed Alvin Kallicharran's C&G highest of 206 and almost doubled Surrey's limited-overs record of 146, set by Grahame Clinton against Kent in 1985.

Brown, who struck 12 sixes and 30 fours, also holds the record of 203 for the 40-overs National League.

Surrey's total of 438 for five topped the previous competition highest of 413 scored by Somerset against Devon 12 years ago and smashed their own one-day best of 350 against Worcestershire in 1994.

Brown and Ian Ward, who was bowled for 97, also set a first-wicket record of 286 for the competition, along the way beating Surrey's allwicket limited-overs record of 180 set by Graham Thorpe and David Ward in 1994.

Brown, 32 and in his benefit year, mutilated Glamorgan's bowling and most of his sixes peppered the now closed "The Cricketers" pub next to the gasometer.

He started his cricketing life as a slogger and passed 200 several times in schools cricket. He made his Surrey debut in 1992 and forced his way into the England side. Yet his 16 appearances in one-day internationals yielded only 354 runs, including one century.

Today, on a flat pitch only 55 yards from the gasometer boundary, he took full advantage, playing some astonishing shots. Several replacement balls were needed as, one by one, they disappeared out of the ground.

Alex Tudor, Surrey's hero in the third npower Test at Old Trafford, was relegated to 12th man and when there was a break he ran out to give Brown a rubdown with a towel and provide drinks. Brown was bowled by Mike Kasprowicz in the final over of the innings.

Astonishingly, Glamorgan were soon well ahead of the required run rate as Robert Croft raced to his 50 off 22 balls after hitting five fours in Martin Bicknell's opening over.
