Cameroon stranded

13 April 2012

Cameroon, due to arrive in Japan today to play a final warm-up game against England on Sunday, are stranded in Bangkok without a flight plan to get them to the World Cup.

The African champions were today forced to make an unscheduled landing in the Thailand capital - five days after they were supposed to be at their training camp in Japan.

They were expected to arrive at Nakatsue last Sunday but World Cup officials said they had been delayed due to technical problems with the plane. But it then emerged that players were refusing to travel because their World Cup pay was not guaranteed.

Cameroon president Paul Biya then intervened to resolve the pay problem on Tuesday afternoon and the Cameroon team left Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris shortly before midnight on their chartered flight.

After a stopover in Bombay, the journey resumed this morning but according to the French press the plane had to land in Bangkok because the pilot had not received clearance to fly over Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Cameroon, who are the African Nations Cup winners, open their World Cup campaign against the Republic of Ireland on 1 June in Niigata.
