Campbell to make England return

12 April 2012

Veteran defender Sol Campbell will step into the breach for England as replacement for injured captain John Terry.

England coach Steve McClaren confirmed the 33-year-old Portsmouth stopper will partner Rio Ferdinand against Estonia instead of Terry, who was ruled out of the Euro 2008 qualifier with a knee injury.

"I can confirm that John Terry won't play and Sol Campbell will be the one to come in," said McClaren.

And McClaren is confident he has got a better than able replacement in Campbell.

"To be able to call on someone with that experience, that quality, that is tremendous," he added.

"His reaction has been excellent, as expected."

McClaren's side face Russia in a crunch Group E qualifier on Wednesday and the England manager revealed he expects to be able to rule Terry in or out of the game on Monday.

He added on Sky Sports News: "His knee settled down and we'll hope it settles down in the next two days and we'll make a decision on Monday."

McClaren admitted choosing between midfielders Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry was a "massive decision", with the Aston Villa man appearing to be in pole position after stepping in following the Chelsea player's injury.

"It's a massive decision but a good one to be in to have two players who have performed well," McClaren said. "Frank Lampard has performed consistently over the years, Gareth Barry has come in to the last two games and done well. It will be finalised later."
