Carrick targets Gerrard

12 April 2012

Michael Carrick has a simple message for his Manchester United team-mates if they want to beat Liverpool - stop Steven Gerrard.

The Reds captain missed his club's Champions League win over Bordeaux in midweek with a hamstring injury but has been declared fit for the Old Trafford encounter by coach Rafael Benitez.

"Steven Gerrard is a great player," Carrick told MUTV. "He is Liverpool's leader and their main man. When he plays well Liverpool play well and tend to win their games."

He added: "If I get the chance to play against him I know it will be a big test - but it is one I will relish."

Carrick seems likely to keep his place in United's starting line-up even though he is yet to hit top form since his £18.6million summer move from Tottenham.

So far, Red Devils supporters have seen only sporadic evidence of the famed passing game which earned him the affection of Spurs boss Martin Jol.

The fine recent displays of Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo have meant that, to some extent, Carrick has been able to ease himself into life at United.

However, he knows there would be no better time to turn on the style than against opponents with whom his new club have a fierce and bitter rivalry.

"There is more at stake in this game than just three points, I am fully aware of that," he said.

"Even before I signed for United, I knew this was a special game and how much it meant to the people involved - so I hope we can get the job done."
