Charged athletes free to run in Olympics

14 April 2012

Tim Montgomery and five other American athletes charged with doping offences will compete in this week's US Olympic trials in Sacramento.

"The law of the United States is quite clear," US Track & Field chief executive officer Craig Masback said. "Unless someone has received a full due-process hearing and found to be ineligible, they must be allowed to compete."

World 100metres record holder Montgomery (above), Olympic 400m silver medallist Alvin Harrison, former world indoor 200m champion Michelle Collins and former Olympic relay medallist Chrystie Gaines have been charged by the US Anti-Doping Agency, although none has failed a doping test.

World indoor 1,500m record holder Regina Jacobs and Olympic 4x400m relay gold medallist Calvin Harrison both tested positive for banned substances.
