Charlton 'paying for lack of ambition'

Mathias Svensson has blamed Charlton's alarming dip in form on a lack of ambition.

The former Charlton striker scored an 88th minute goal to earn Norwich their 1-0 win and all but ended his former club's European dreams for another year.

Svensson believes the club where he spent four years are struggling to move on to the next level and said: "I don't think they set their standards high enough.

"Every year they say, 'We are aiming to be safe again,' instead of saying, 'This year we are going to go for Europe,' and put the ambition maybe a bit higher than they normally do. They always go for the 40 points, and then when they get there it seems like everyone is relaxing a bit, which is not the way to go.

"I think they'll learn. It is just one of those things."

Charlton have won only once in 11 Premiership games; a run which has left manager Alan Curbishley and the players tearing their hair out.

"Norwich seem to have a flow with them at the moment and we do not but that is the way it goes," said winger Jonatan Johansson.

"It is disappointing because we were in a great position and then have let it slip a little bit.

"The effort is there, the fitness is there, so it is difficult. I don't think it is a psychological thing, at least not for the players.

"I can't put my finger to it because we had such a good run before and then we always seem to fade away a little bit, which is disappointing.

"There are still three games to go so I hope we can pick up before the end of the season."
