Chelsea act over fights

Chelsea have tightened security for tomorrow's match against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

The move follows vicious fighting outside White Hart Lane and an attack on the Chelsea team coach after Sunday's FA Cup quarterfinal. Tottenham fans hurled stones and smashed a coach window as Chelsea left following their stormy 4-0 victory.

None of the players were hurt in the attack but in pitched battles in the streets around Tottenham's ground, two men were stabbed and a policeman suffered a broken foot.

Tottenham employed 150 extra stewards on Sunday but could not prevent a coin being thrown at assistant referee Alan Green.

The Football Association, who were today studying the referee Andy D'Urso's report, will decide whether to take action against Tottenham after this fifth missilethrowing incident of the season.

Chelsea managing director Colin Hutchinson told Standard Sport today that his club recognise that extra precautions will be needed for tomorrow.

He said: "We are mindful of the match and are reviewing our security procedures."

Meanwhile, Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen, who scored two goals on Sunday, has vowed that Spurs will find no respite in the rematch.

Gudjohnsen said: "We will be just as fired up. There is no danger of us going easy simply because we have knocked Tottenham out of the Cup and got revenge for that horrible Worthington Cup defeat.

"Our ambition is still to get into the Champions League this season and, for that, we need every point we can get. The mood has been fantastic in training. Everyone was so delighted we got our own back."

Spurs defender Dean Richards says Spurs must not lose their cool tomorrow. Tempers will be running high following Sunday's tie in which Graeme Le Saux was sent off for a lunge at substitute Mauricio Taricco.

Frank Lampard was also booked for a kick at Taricco and the simmering feuds could be continued at Stamford Bridge.

Richards admitted: "Emotions were running high throughout Sunday's game and they will be again I'm sure. There were a lot of tackles flying in so it is going to be a big test for us and we must remain professional.

"There was a lot of passion in Sunday's game and that will be repeated but it is important we do not lose our cool and we keep calm. We must keep our minds on the game and make sure nobody gets sent off. We have to make sure nothing untoward happens."
