Clarke: Let's end majors drought

Darren Clarke today challenged Europe's golfer to knuckle down and emulate his success in the NEC Invitational World Championship.

Clarke won his first strokeplay tournament in the US and a career record prize cheque of £658,000 when a final round of 67 at the Firestone Country Club in Akron left the Surrey-based Ulsterman with a 12-under-total of 268, four clear of American Jonathan Kaye.

Victory came only a week after 35-year-old Clarke found himself caught up in a mass exit of European players from the halfway stage of the USPGA Championship.

Not one European has made the cut in all four majors this year and relieved Clarke said: "Hopefully, it will show the other Europeans that they can come over here and win because they're good enough to do it."
