Collins: Scoring more is Fulham's goal

Matt Hughes13 April 2012

Player-coach John Collins has admitted Fulham have a weakness in front of goal.

Fulham scored only 36 goals in the Premiership last season and have found the net twice in three games against poor sides in this year's InterToto Cup.

Only a 78th-minute goal from Louis Saha spared their blushes at Craven Cottage on Saturday against Aigaleo side, who finished 10th in the Greek League last season. Collins said: "Scoring goals is something we have to improve. It was our weakness last year and is something we're aware of.

"We're working hard and will continue to work hard to try and improve it.

"We've got the players here who can score the goals, and it's just a matter of building confidence, getting a few lucky goals and taking it from there."

Fulham have only conceded once in their three InterToto fixtures, and an impressed Collins added: "We didn't concede a goal which is important in Europe. We had a few chances, but did not take them, but we persevered and got what we deserved. A win is a win."

The second leg is in Panathinaikos' stadium on Saturday and should Fulham progress they will meet FC Sochaux-Montbeliard of France.

As for the new campaign, Collins said: "You've always got to strive to do better than the season before, and that's what we're doing. Hopefully we can get into Europe through the Premiership and avoid the InterToto next season."

Manager Jean Tigana, meanwhile, has failed to sign Victor Sikora from Vitesse Arnhem.

The Dutch club want the £3m fee up front, but Fulham would prefer to pay over the length of the proposed four-year deal.
