UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has 'decided to retire young', according to a message released via his official Twitter account on Tuesday evening.

McGregor, 27, is one of UFC’s biggest stars despite losing his last fight - a non-title bout - to Nate Diaz on March 6 in Las Vegas.

The Dublin-born fighter's tweet read: “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya's later.”

McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh appeared to corroborate McGregor’s announcement, tweeting the message: “Well it was fun while it lasted.”

McGregor’s message came despite announcing just a day before that he was back in training in Rejkjavik, Iceland ahead of his rematch with Diaz on July 9 at UFC 200.

Diaz responded to the news on Twitter by joking about retiring as well, sending out a tweet which read: “I guess my work here is done I'm retiring too.”

McGregor had suggested last week that a Total Extreme Fighting bout which led to the death of MMA fighter Joao Carvalho could have been stopped earlier by the referee.

The Portuguese athlete underwent brain surgery immediately after being rushed to hospital following a defeat to Charlie Ward in Dublin, and stayed in critical condition for 48 hours before passing away on April 12.

The UFC star said of Carvalho's death in a Facebook post: "Terrible news regarding Joao Carvalho.

"To see a young man doing what he loves, competing for a chance at a better life, and then to have it taken away is truly heartbreaking."
