Convey is bound for Spurs

Tottenham are understood to have agreed a £1million deal for DC United midfielder Bobby Convey.

The move is now believed to hinge on the United States international, 20, being granted a work permit.

Convey's agent Dan Segal said: "We are involved in obtaining a work permit. However, nothing is guaranteed and the deal can't go through without it."

Spurs are believed to have struck a deal with Major League Soccer, who represent all US players, where they will pay £750,000, plus a further £300,000 based on appearances.

Providing the Home Office gives the go-ahead, Convey is expected sign a four-year contact, worth around £5,000 a week.

The left-sided player impressed manager Glenn Hoddle when DC United played Spurs in a friendly at White Hart Lane last October. Negotiations then intensified following Tottenham's visit to Washington for another exhibition match in May.

Meanwhile, Hoddle will be without several players for Sunday's home friendly with Sporting Lisbon. Freddie Kanoute is out for two weeks after suffering a groin injury in his first training session with the club. Christian Ziege and Ledley King are also missing, while Dean Richards (achilles) and Darren Anderton (hamstring) are doubtful.
