Under-pressure opener Alastair Cook was given an early chance to repay the selectors' faith after England won the toss and opted to bat first in the third npower Test at The Brit Oval.

Cook has endured a tough summer and was relieved to see the hosts name an unchanged side after managing only 100 runs in his last seven innings.

Pakistan, returning to the scene of the dramatic forfeited Test in 2006, made four changes from the side that went 2-0 down at Edgbaston with Mohammad Yousuf, Kamran Akmal and Yasir Hameed recalled, and left-armer Wahab Riaz making his debut.
