Coppell to stay for one more season at Reading

13 April 2012

Steve Coppell will see out the remaining year of his contract Reading after considering his future following relegation.

He is on a week's holiday and has yet to inform chairman John Madejski of his decision, but Sportsmail understands he will stay for one more season.

Staying: Coppell

Coppell is determined to lead Reading back into the Barclays Premier League at the first attempt and believes the current squad are good enough to do it.

He was frustrated by the lack of funds last summer, but also accepts he should have signed more players for their second season in the top flight.

He is also scarred by a previous relegation experience.

Coppell resigned in the wake of Crystal Palace's drop from the Premier League in 1993 and the team returned to the top flight at the first attempt.

He privately believes it was a mistake to have left Palace so quickly and does not want anyone else to take over at Reading and claim the credit if they are promoted.

Coppell's £1.5million salary will be cut in half next season, but it is understood he will still quit at the end of the next campaign even if he manages to mastermind a Premier League return.
