County cricket round-up

Surrey

Mark Butcher made a significant contribution on his return to Surrey's championship side at The Oval today - significant in helping Warwickshire get away to a flying start.
Butcher, left out against Lancashire a fortnight ago, spilled a seemingly straightforward catch when stand-in opener Tony Frost edged Jimmy Ormond to second slip.
Frost, deputising at the top of the order for Michael Powell, was on 26 at the time.
But, far from going into his shell after that reprieve, the keeper raced to 50 (off 69 balls) and had supplied 70 of Warwickshire's 140 for nought by lunch. Nick Knight contributed 51 (from 107 balls) to the mauling of Surrey's attack.
Warwicks 140-0 (33 overs) v Surrey

Sussex v Kent

Kent struck three times before lunch after putting Sussex in at Hove. Martin Saggers dismissed Murray Goodwin and Alamgir Sheriyar bowled Richard Montgomerie before Mark Ealham caught Phillip Cottey. For Sussex, Chris Adams is nearing 50.
Sussex 129-3 (35 overs) v Kent

Essex

Aftab Habib hit seven fours on his way to 35 not out as Essex struggled to 91-5 at lunch after winning the toss against Leicestershire, with Paul Grayson failing to score.
Leicestershire v Essex 91-5 (35 overs)
