Ed Smith showed Robert Key the way with a fine performance on the first day against Lancashire at Blackpool.
In-form Smith came to the crease when Key was dismissed for one, after Kent elected to bat.
Smith (165 no) and David Fulton put on 122 before the latter fell for 47. Andrew Symonds was next out for 10.

Sussex

Mushtaq Ahmed destroyed the Leicestershire attack with five wickets today. The Pakistan star took three wickets after lunch, adding Trevor Ward, Paul Nixon and Brad Hodge to the wickets of Darren Maddy and Darren Stevens (51). James Kirtley saw off John Maunders with the second ball of the first innings this morning.

Middlesex

Four wickets fell before lunch as Middlesex turned the screw on Warwickshire.
Ashley Noffke conceded just one run from his first three overs, removing Mark Wagh for a duck, and Mike Powell failed to get into double figures as he was dismissed by Ben Hutton. Nick Knight hit the first boundary of the day off Chad Keegan, but was out for 11.

Hampshire

Wasim Akram has quit Hampshire because of ill health. The Pakistan star is a diabetic.
Against Glamorgan today, Hampshire had no answer to Adrian Dale, who was 100 not out.
