Court gives sprint star a warrant to go 'on the run'

13 April 2012

Mark Lewis-Francis will compete in the European Indoor Championships in Vienna this weekend, despite having a warrant without bail issued against him.

The 19-year-old British sprint star (right), due to run in his 60 metres heat on Saturday, failed to attend court yesterday to answer motoring charges. These include driving without insurance, failing to stop at a red traffic light, having no MOT test certificate and not possessing any documents.

He could also be charged with failure to attend court. Wolverhampton magistrates ordered his arrest and he could have been forced to fly home and answer to his bail. But UK Athletics said today it had spoken to the court and the world 100m junior champion could remain abroad for the championships.
