Andrew Strauss pleased Kevin Pietersen is a mentor

Andrew Strauss is heartened to hear Kevin Pietersen is encouraging the clutch of emerging players in England’s NatWest Series squad.

England limited-overs coach Ashley Giles has talked of how Pietersen has been a great help in trying to nurture the talent.

Pietersen (above) was exiled from the England squad last year after admitting sending “provocative” texts about Strauss, then England captain, to South Africa players.

Despite their history, Strauss is not surprised Pietersen is supporting team-mates such as Michael Carberry, Ben Stokes, Chris Jordan and Jamie Overton.

Strauss said: “He can be really good with young players. I suppose Kevin is a complicated character but he can be fantastic and engaged in the dressing room and really go out of his way to help other people.”

England, 1-0 down in the five‑game series, play Australia in the fourth ODI in Cardiff tomorrow.
