Ashley Giles is leading the race to replace Andrew Strauss as England’s director of cricket, with his appointment potentially being announced in the coming days.

Former England captain Strauss took the revamped job in 2015 but stepped down in October to spend more time with his family while his wife, Ruth, is treated for cancer. He had been on leave since May, with former coach Andy Flower covering. Flower did not apply for the job.

Giles would have to leave his role as Warwickshire director of sport to rejoin the ECB. He was England’s white-ball coach under Flower for 18 months until 2014 and an England selector from 2008-14. Giles, who played 54 Tests, then took over as Lancashire coach before returning to Warwickshire in 2017.

Clare Connor, the director of cricket for England women, was mooted as a candidate but did not apply. Neither did Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart.

The successful candidate will take over in the new year and his most vital job in the short term will be finding a replacement for England head coach Trevor Bayliss, who steps down when his contract ends in September.
