Boost for England with James Anderson in line to return for fourth Ashes Test

England have been handed a further Ashes boost with the news that James Anderson will return to action for Lancashire Second XI on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old injured his right calf on the first morning of the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston, which England lost by 251 runs. The Second Test finished at Lord’s and, in Anderson’s absence, ended in a draw.

Anderson remained with the squad throughout that match and bowled with the coaching staff, who have decreed that he must get match practise if he is to be selected in a Test. He went into the First Test having not played for a month following a similar calf issue.

Anderson was not ready to play in Lancashire’s ongoing Championship match against Glamorgan, but will play for the Second XI against Leicestershire in a three-day match – he is set to bowl on the first – at Northern Cricket Club in Liverpool, with a view to playing in the Fourth Test at Old Trafford, where there is an end named after him, on September 4.

England have kept faith with the squad for Lord’s, meaning they have stuck with the misfiring Jason Roy and Joe Denly, and that Sam Curran will be withdrawn from Surrey’s XI at the close on Monday, the second day, of their Championship match against Hampshire. Conor McKerr will replace him.
