Alastair Cook has backed Chris Jordan to become a star of England’s Test team this summer after his explosive form in limited-overs cricket.

Jordan was man of the match as England defeated Sri Lanka in a rain-affected match at The Kia Oval last night to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match one-day series. After striking a brilliant 38 not out from 13 balls with five fours and two sixes to give a late boost to the innings. He then took three for 25, helping Cook’s team to an 81-run victory under the Duckworth-Lewis Method.

Asked whether Jordan was capable of shining in the Test arena, Cook said: “Everyone can see that. His four-day record in recent times has been very good indeed and I really want to see him bowl with the red ball.

“He seems to be able to handle international cricket, which is really important for me to see. It’s a very big step and a very different game from county cricket but at the moment, he is doing everything we are asking of him.”
