Alastair Cook celebrated his promotion to Test skipper by making sure England stayed at the top of the one-day world rankings until the end of the year with a six-wicket victory over South Africa at Lord’s yesterday.

The batsman, England’s one-day captain for more than a year, replaced Andrew Strauss at the helm of the Test team last week.

Asked if it feels life has changed, Cook, who scored only two as England eased past South Africa’s total of 220 to take a 2-1 series lead, said: “It hasn’t yet. It might do in a few days, when Test selection comes up and all the planning for the future. But at the moment, it doesn’t feel any different.”

Jonathan Trott was having a scan on his right hand today after he was struck by Dale Steyn, a blow that looks to have ended his summer. Trott has not been selected for the three-match T20 series which follows Wednesday’s final ODI at Trent Bridge.
