Duckworth-Lewis method needs review, says Paul Collingwood

Defeat: England had looked on course for victory
10 April 2012

England skipper Paul Collingwood was left calling for the Duckworth-Lewis method to be reviewed after his side suffered a eight-wicket defeat in their rain-affected ICC World Twenty20 opener against West Indies.

England had looked on course for victory following a superb batting display, marked by a quickfire 95-run stand between Eoin Morgan and Luke Wright, as they posted 191 for five in Guyana.

The reply was cut short by rain when West Indies had reached 30 for none after 2.2 overs, and when the players re-emerged the recalculated chase left the tournament hosts needing a very achievable 30 from 22 balls - a task they managed with a ball remaining.

"Obviously we are very, very frustrated. I though the boys played what was a fantastic game today," Collingwood told Sky Sports 1.

"I think 95% of the time when you put 191 runs on the board you are going to win the game.

"Somehow Duckworth-Lewis seems to bring that equation down a fair bit. I don't know what equation you should have but you shouldn't have that one.

"It does get very frustrating as a team when you've pretty much played a very good game there and you still come out losers. But now we've got a very important game coming up against Ireland."

England must beat Ireland in their final Group D game tonight to ensure a place in the Super Eights and Collingwood said they must now focus their attentions on that game.

"We've got to win, it's a pressure game, but we can take a lot of belief out of today, I think we even did well with the ball there," he added.

"I think the bowlers did pretty well to get it down to the final few balls with that kind of equation.

"We'll try and take the emotion out of it, we're disappointed but we've got to win today."
