Durham have signed disgraced Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft as their overseas player across all formats for the 2019 season.

Bancroft was banned for nine months from all international and domestic cricket in his homeland for his role in the ball-tampering scandal during Australia’s tour of South Africa this year.

Somerset cancelled their deal with Bancroft before the season began, opting instead for Matt Renshaw, his replacement in the Test side, who enjoyed a successful stint and is likely to return.

But Durham have handed Bancroft a contract for next season. He will represent Western Australia in the second half of the next southern summer and will hope to break his way back into the Test side for next year’s Ashes tour.

Bancroft, 25, said: “I am grateful for the opportunity and I can’t wait to get over and make an impact.”

Durham head coach Jon Lewis saying: “Cameron provides us with a very talented overseas signing.”
