Eoin Morgan claimed England came close to achieving perfection after they demolished South Africa by nine wickets.

Morgan's team put their Champions Trophy disappointment behind them as Jonny Bairstow scored an unbeaten 60 - from 35 deliveries - to clinch victory with 33 balls to spare.

England are 1-0 up with two to play in the Twenty20 series and unless South Africa can make a vast improvement, it is hard to see how they stop England taking the series at Taunton on Friday.

South Africa's total of 142 for three always looked well in range for England, and so it proved.

Morgan said: "It was as close to a complete performance as I could ask for. The bowlers did an unbelievable job, even after they had taken early wickets.

"The partnership between AB De Villiers and Farhaan Berhardien was quite significant but they never really got away from us.

"The two spinners (Liam Dawson and debutant Mason Crane) held their nerve well and the seamers backed them up at the end of the innings.

"Then the way we came out and batted after that dictated the way the game went."

Although he did not take a wicket, leg-spinner Crane looked promising in his first international game.

Struggling opener Jason Roy played a poor shot to get out but played some fine shots in his 28 from 14 deliveries.

South Africa captain De Villiers said: "They bowled very well. We were outplayed tonight."
