England deserve to be number one side in Test cricket, says Allan Donald

10 April 2012

England deserve to take over the number one Test ranking from India, according to former South Africa bowler Allan Donald.

Andrew Strauss' men need to win the current series between the two sides by at least two matches to ascend to the summit and they took a step towards doing that with their comprehensive first-Test victory at Lord's.

Donald told BBC Radio 5 Live: "England deserve to be the number one, there's no question about it.

"They are a good side, they're progressing every game. They're progressing as a really good unit."

Asked if their attack was the best in the world, Donald, who had a stint as a bowling coach for the side in 2007, said: "There's no question.

"Chris Tremlett, (Stuart) Broad, Anderson and Graeme Swann are fantastic. Then you've got a few more in the bank - Tim Bresnan still in the wings.

"It's amazing how the guys have grown since 2007. Anderson has led the attack with absolute disdain."
