England let slip a promising position on the first day of the final Ashes Test as Australia moved closer to a 5-0 series whitewash.

The tourists handed Test debuts to three players - Boyd Rankin, Scott Borthwick and Gary Ballance, but the team continued to struggle.

Brad Haddin and Steve Smith rescued Australia from 97-5 before their side was eventually dismissed for 326.

Stephen Brenkley and Tom Collomosse give their verdicts on the opening day's play from Sydney, in particular England's decision to throw in a trio of debutants.
