England assistant coach Paul Farbrace is a prime candidate to succeed Jason Gillespie as Yorkshire coach.

The county champions are looking for a replacement for Gillespie after the Australian announced he would leave Headingley after five seasons in the post.

Farbrace was on duty here today as England chased the victory that would deliver a series win over Pakistan with two of the five 50-over matches still to play.

But the highly rated Farbrace is virtually certain to be sought out by Yorkshire when they step up the process at the end of the season.

Farbrace was Second XI coach at Yorkshire from 2012-13, when he worked with a number of the players who are now in the county’s First XI.

Impressive Gloucestershire coach Richard Dawson is thought to be another name in the frame.

Whether Farbrace would want to return to the first-class game is a moot point — as is whether Yorkshire could afford him.

He is held in high esteem by the England players and his CV is impressive. Working alongside Trevor Bayliss, Farbrace helped Sri Lanka become one of the best limited-overs teams in the world over a number of years. Then, as head coach, Farbrace guided Sri Lanka to world T20 glory in 2014.

He signed a contract later that year to work as Peter Moores’s England assistant and when Moores was replaced by Bayliss, Farbrace retained his post.

Yorkshire may have to make a financial effort to secure Farbrace as salaries in the county game are not as high as with the wealthiest international teams.

But if there was willingness on both sides to make the move, it is likely a compromise could be reached.

England managing director Andrew Strauss knows the importance of Farbrace among the squad and would doubtless be reluctant to lose him, especially with tours of Bangladesh and India this autumn and winter and the Champions Trophy — which takes place on home soil — next summer.

Yorkshire are expected to take their time over the appointment, with the immediate focus to deliver the county’s third successive County Championship.

Gillespie will return to Australia at the end of the season and resume his coaching role with Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash T20 tournament.

Thereafter, his availability is likely to attract interest from Indian Premier League franchises.
