England were planning to assess Stuart Broad ahead of West Indies’ second innings after the pace bowler suffered discomfort in his left heel on the opening day.

The injury has flared up at various times since he first damaged the fat pad in India in 2012, and he did not look at his best yesterday as he sent down 12 overs from the Nursery End, conceding 24 runs and failing to take a wicket.

He left the field during the second half of the tourists’ innings and did not bowl again.

England medical staff were hopeful the overnight rest would have helped Broad, and the 31-year-old was expected to be checked before play today.
