Jimmy Anderson expects to be available for his home Test at Old Trafford next week after missing this week’s opener against Pakistan with a shoulder injury.

Anderson was left out of the England squad for the first game of the four-match Investec Series, which starts at Lord’s on Thursday, due to a stress fracture in his right shoulder.

But Standard Sport understands Anderson believed he would have been fit to play at Lord’s this week, and is confident he will be ready for the Second Test, starting on July 22.

Anderson bowled in the nets during Lancashire’s recent draw with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in the County Championship, and reported no ill effects. His absence means England will have a Test debutant in their pace attack this week — either Jake Ball or Toby Roland-Jones.

Meanwhile, England are hopeful batsman Gary Ballance will recover from a groin injury in order to make his Test comeback. Ballance pulled out of Yorkshire’s Twenty20 match against Derbyshire yesterday.
