Essex turn to controversial Jesse Ryder

Jesse Ryder will join Essex as an overseas player next month in a move that will raise eyebrows across the county game.

The New Zealand opening batsman is one of the most brutal hitters in the game but is known as well for his activities off the field as he is for his exploits on it.

In February, Ryder and team-mate Doug Bracewell were dropped by New Zealand for going on a late-night drinking session on the eve of the First Test against India. Ryder had only recently returned to the squad after a six-month drug ban.

Despite the controversy the 29-year-old’s talent has never been in question. He will play all forms of cricket for Essex and, if the signings bears fruit, he is certain to provide excitement for the Chelmsford crowd, especially in Twenty20 cricket.

Ryder said: “This couldn’t have come at a better time as I want to get as much cricket as possible over the New Zealand winter. It’s an added bonus that there are a few of the guys who I have played with before, the side look very strong and they have got off to a good start this season.”

Ryder must now wait to see whether he will be granted a visa. If that process is completed smoothly, Ryder could make his debut in the Division Two match against Leicestershire, which starts on May 4.
