Graeme Swann insists there is plenty of one-day international mileage left in Andrew Strauss' England, irrespective of whether their World Cup campaign comes to an abrupt end this week.
Swann is aghast at weekend reports, understood to be wide of the mark, that Strauss is considering retiring as England's ODI captain at the end of this campaign.
The off-spinner is confident too that, as in Test cricket, the team currently representing England have much collective potential for future success.
World Cups have a habit of spelling the end for England captains - Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan both stepped down after poor outcomes in 2003 and 2007 - and it is a feasible rationale that Strauss might want to concentrate his efforts on trying to lead England to the top of the world rankings in the Test format.
Swann, however, does not see it that way - and, set to turn 32 this month, has a vested interest in the longevity of the present squad.
"I hope it's not a watershed, because that normally means the older players get the boot - and I'm one of them," he said.
"I haven't spoken to Straussy [about his retirement]. He's certainly made no overtures about resignation to any of the team. I'd be very surprised if that was the case."
England are in grave danger of another early World Cup exit, and must beat West Indies in Chennai on Thursday to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 1996.
