'Gutted' Stuart Broad is sidelined again

In agony: Stuart Broad feels the pain at Lord's yesterday

Stuart Broad is likely to face another spell on the sidelines after tearing a muscle in his upper arm in yesterday's tied one-day international against India.

Broad looks certain to miss England's next three matches - the final one-dayer against India and the two T20 games against West Indies - after having a scan on his right arm this morning. He tweeted: "Bad news on the shoulder, torn a muscle. I know which one, just can't spell it. Gutted."

Broad must also now be considered a doubt for the forthcoming limited-overs matches in India next month. England leave on October 3 for five one-dayers and a T20 fixture. Broad's probable absence from the T20 matches at The Oval leaves England with the tricky problem of who should captain the side.

Broad's T20 deputy, Eoin Morgan, is out for 12 weeks after having a shoulder operation. Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann are the only experienced international players in the current first-choice XI, meaning 50-over captain Alastair Cook could be asked to step in for those two fixtures.

Broad has had ill luck with injury problems in the last 12 months, returning early from the Ashes series with a sidestrain.

His setback at Lord's yesterday prevented him from completing the final over of the Indian innings and although he would have batted if required, Swann, Steve Finn and Jimmy Anderson all went in ahead.

The Decision Review System will not be used for England's three-Test series against Pakistan in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in January. The Pakistan Cricket Board have not been able to reach an agreement with their broadcaster, Ten Sports, to fund the technology required.
