How can England win back the Ashes urn from Australia in 2021-22?

Will Macpherson16 September 2019

The climax of an enthralling Ashes series and unforgettable summer of cricket proved somewhat bittersweet for England.

While Joe Root's side ultimately failed to stop the urn from heading back Down Under, a morale-boosting fifth Test victory at The Oval - which secured an overall 2-2 draw - did at least deny Australia a first Ashes series win on these shores since 2001.

England are currently searching for a new head coach, with Trevor Bayliss' four-year stint at the helm now at an end.

Here, Standard Sport's cricket correspondent Will Macpherson looks at how England can regain the urn in Australia in 2021...

Settle on a strategy

Over the past 18 months, England have yoyoed between being a team embracing the chaos that comes with having lots of talented all-rounders and setting up like an orthodox team.

It is time for Joe Root and the new coach to settle on a strategy.

If winning in Australia in 2021/22 is the aim, orthodoxy might suit best.

Stick by your decisions

England’s batting order has been all over the shop.

They must decide where Joe Root and Ben Stokes bat, who the wicketkeeper is and who the next men in are should injury strike and stick by it.

The revolving door must stop.

Jofra Archer has the tools to succeed all over the world.

But Archer needs careful management if he is to make to Australia in 2021/22 in peak condition.
