James Anderson has returned to bowling for the first time since the summer series against Pakistan as he bids to recover in time to feature on England’s tour of India.

The 34-year-old has already been ruled out of the first Test and could even miss the entire tour with a shoulder injury that has already seen him left behind as England tour Bangadesh.

England’s leading wicket taker in Test cricket returned to the nets at the England and Wales Cricket Board’s National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough as part of a “back to bowling programme” that will see him assessed next week before a decision is made on whether he will travel to India.

“They have a tent there so I will be bowling outdoors,” Anderson said. “It’ll be a good test and if it goes well I am hoping that we can decide then.

“I have been videoing what I’ve been doing and sending it to the England physios.

“I have got to be realistic. I’ve only been bowling for a week so I can’t rush it.”
