Jason Roy's England place is safe for entire Champions Trophy, says Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan has effectively guaranteed Jason Roy a place in the England team for the whole Champions Trophy – regardless of form.

The opening batsman has passed 20 only once in his last eight one-day innings for England but this has not shaken the faith of Morgan, who also said he expects all-rounder Ben Stokes to bowl in Thursday’s opening game against Bangladesh, at The Kia Oval.

Stokes bowled on the outfield on Wednesday and will have more tests on his left knee on the morning of the match before a final decision is made – although he will play as a specialist batsman.

It seems clear, however, that Roy is in no danger – despite the excellent performances of Jonny Bairstow during the last two years.

England skipper Morgan said: “The decision will remain the same throughout the tournament. Jason Roy is part of our strong opening partnership with Alex Hales, and he'll definitely play.

“Jonny Bairstow will miss out unfortunately – it's been the case for the last couple of years. He's been very good when he's come in, but one of the strongest parts of reinforcing the way we play, and the freedom, is backing that up with (consistent) selection.

“Chris Woakes, who had a thigh problem, is 100 per cent fit and has come through the last two or three days really well. Ben Stokes has had a little bowl today, and we will see how he pulls up tomorrow to see how much he will bowl – but I certainly see him bowling.”
