Joe Root says England must be astute by balancing county and World Cup form in selecting the squad for the Ashes.

Jofra Archer and Jason Roy are in contention for the Ashes but cannot play red-ball cricket before the Test against Ireland, 10 days after the World Cup Final.

Joe Denly, the incumbent Test No3, will play in the Championship after being dropped from the World Cup squad.

“It’s very important the selectors watching county cricket see how guys do during the World Cup,” said Root.

“We have to be astute and smart, it’s important we take into consideration the Championship.

"There’s opportunity to impress, and someone like Joe Denly gets an opportunity to play some red-ball cricket.”
