Marcus Trescothick hopes Nick Compton will shine

10 April 2012

Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick expects Nick Compton to prove a "big asset" for the county after his move from Middlesex.

Compton's switch this week came after he asked to leave Middlesex, for whom he scored over 1,600 runs last season.

And the 26-year-old's arrival should go some way to compensating for the departure of Australian Justin Langer, who retired at the end of the season.

Trescothick welcomed the arrival of a player who has represented England A in the past, and who could become his new opening partner.

He told www.somersetcountycc.co.uk: "I am delighted with the signing of Nick Compton, who is a good player in four-day and one-day cricket.

"After a hugely promising start to his career, he encountered the problems a lot of batsmen, including myself, have gone through as bowlers start to work you out. But he seems to have come through that period now and I believe he will be a big asset."

Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose believes Compton, grandson of the great Denis Compton, can build on his so-far brief involvement in international cricket.

Rose said: "Marcus Trescothick and I share the opinion that Nick can improve rapidly in the Somerset environment and go on to higher honours."
