The Middlesex head coach Richard Scott has left the club, paying the price for the club’s poor performances in Division Two this season.

Bowling coach Richard Johnson, the former England fast bowler, has been placed in charge of the Championship side until the end of the season, while Daniel Vettori has arrived to look after the T20 Blast campaign, which begins against Surrey at a sold-out Lord’s on Thursday. The process to hire a replacement for the 2019 season is under way.

Scott, who took over in 2009, coached Middlesex to their first title in 23 years in 2016, but the club’s fortunes have nose-dived since.

They were narrowly relegated in 2017 and, after a dismal pink-ball defeat to Kent last week, are fifth in Division Two having played half of their 14 matches. They have won just two games, are 45 points behind second-placed Kent and promotion looks a long shot. They did not qualify for the knockout stages of the Royal London One-Day Cup, either.

“On behalf of Middlesex CCC I would like to thank Richard for all that he has given the Club as Head Coach during the past 10 years; he has been a loyal, hard-working, committed and high-quality coach,” said Angus Fraser, the director of cricket.

“As with every coach in professional sport we have shared highs and lows but to play a leading role in a side winning the County Championship is a triumph very few coaches can claim. Under his guidance more than a dozen cricketers have gone on to gain international recognition.”
