Banned Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Amir has played down suggestions he will make a sensational comeback at next year’s World Cup.

Along with his former new-ball partner Mohammad Asif and captain Salman Butt, Amir was suspended from all cricket for his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal during the Lord’s Test against England in August 2010. Amir was also sentenced to a six-month prison term in November 2011.

Pakistan cricket chiefs are involved in ongoing talks with the International Cricket Council to reduce Amir’s five-year ban, which would expire in September 2015. The World Cup will take place in Australia and New Zealand from February but Amir is extremely cautious about his chances of taking part.

“I don’t see myself playing in the World Cup,” said Amir, speaking on television in his home country. “It is not realistic, because all these things have to go through a process.

“I am just grateful to the cricket board for taking up my case. I will be ready whenever I am given the chance to resume training or playing.”
