Jason Roy and Tom Curran will miss Surrey’s One-Day derby against Middlesex on Thursday with injury but are set to join their England team-mates for a camp in Cardiff this weekend.

Roy suffered a back spasm in the win over Essex on Tuesday, meaning he retired hurt then returned to the crease later in the innings, but did not field. Curran missed that match with a knee niggle and is absent on Thursday with “a low grade calf injury”.

Their absences are offset by the availability of Jordan Clark, who signed from Lancashire this winter, for the first time and Dean Elgar, who arrives as overseas player. Middlesex will also have their overseas player, New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, available for the first time.

Surrey’s Rikki Clarke and Ollie Pope also suffered injuries against Essex, and they look more serious. Clarke had an operation on Tuesday on an open dislocation on his right hand, while Pope has dislocated his shoulder. Both will see specialists in the coming days.

There was some good news for England as Liam Plunkett put a poor start to the season behind him with a match-winning four for 50. He believes he relocated pace after spotting an issue with his run-up and working on it with Morne Morkel and Surrey bowling coach Richard Johnson.

"I felt a hundred times better,” he said. “Even if I didn't take the four wickets, even if it was just one, I'd have felt like I've got something out of this game. I attacked the crease, my pace was late 80s and I had some snap and control.

“It is a relief. I work hard on my game. I have done all the one per-centers in the last few months to put myself in a good place, but if you are not performing and getting wickets, you put pressure on yourself. After today, it is nice to get that performance for the team and me because I felt like I was cranking up to where I want to be and felt like the old me of the last few years.”
