Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock today backed the Premier League’s idea of playing a round of competitive matches abroad.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore is exploring the possibility of playing fixtures around the world as part of the existing 38-game season.

The controversial concept of a 39th game, which would have meant an extra round of matches played overseas, was scrapped but there is growing belief that the latest proposal could come to fruition within five years. Talks are at an early stage but it is believed top-flight clubs would be open to playing games outside of England to build on the Premier League’s popularity abroad.

The idea is likely to meet strong resistance from English football fans but Palace boss Warnock has backed the plans.

“I have had my run-ins with Scudamore but you cannot deny what he has done for the League and I would never say never to anything if he thinks it is a viable idea,” he said.
