Cullen orders improvement

12 April 2012

England coach Paul Cullen knows his Super League youngsters will need to sharpen their act if they are to lift the Federation Shield.

Cullen's team made it three wins out of three with a 38-14 success against Samoa at Hull's KC Stadium on Sunday, thanks largely to a hat-trick of tries from debutant centre Ryan Atkins. Already assured of a place in next Sunday's tournament decider at Widnes, England's final opponents will be Tonga who thrashed France 48-10 in their last group game in Castres.

"We're satisfied that we've got three out of three - but the job isn't done," said Cullen. "We weren't as fluent as we were in our previous two games. We will need to be better next week because the Tongans will be enthused by their win."

Samoa coach John Ackland, whose side lost 18-10 to Tonga in their opening Shield match which doubled as a World Cup qualifier, believes Jim Dymock's team are capable of springing a shock against England.

"They play a very physical brand of 'footie'," he said.

"I think it will be a good, tough game. The bulk of the Tongan side have played NRL football, so it should be a good contest."
