Cunning Foxe signs for Harry

West Ham finally got their man today when they signed Australian defender Hayden Foxe on a free transfer.

The Upton Park club have had a series of problems in their efforts to obtain a work permit for the 23-year-old, Sydney-born Foxe, who impressed manager Harry Redknapp in pre-season.

Foxe, a regular Australian international, had failed to fulfil the criteria because an injury had meant he had not played the required number of international matches.

He has been playing in Belgium with Mechelen and was planning to re-apply for a work permit to play in England after being involved in Australia's next World Cup qualifier against the Cook Islands.

However, the red-haired centre-half has bypassed that route by marrying French girlfriend Fabienne in Las Vegas and becoming eligible for a visa to work in Europe.

Foxe now looks likely to play in the reserves against Watford tomorrow and could even be included in squad for Saturday's visit by Ipswich.

Redknapp has defensive problems with Christian Dailly out with a chipped bone in his foot and Stuart Pearce still suffering from a sprained ankle.
