Curbs' Wiltord bid

14 April 2012

Charlton are set to move for Sylvain Wiltord to boost their strike force.

Alan Curbishley has failed in a bid to land James Beattie from Southampton and is ready to turn to the French striker.

The 30-year-old joined Arsenal in 2000 but was released by the club at the end of last season on a free transfer after failing to agree a new contract.

Although he failed to make the same impact as Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger always rated Wiltord highly.

"People forget the number of really important goals he scored for us," said Wenger, who repeatedly tried to persuade Wiltord to sign a new deal. But there was deadlock about the length of the new contract and he was allowed to leave.

Wiltord has been linked to Tottenham, Fiorentina and Werder Bremen but is still unattached and Curbishley is trying to make contact to talk terms.
