Daley and Waterfield advance

Defending champion Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield both reached the final of the 10 metre platform at the World Championships in Shanghai and guaranteed two Olympic slots for Great Britain in the process.

Daley was sixth, three places ahead of his synchro partner Waterfield, although Qiu Bo appears almost impossible to catch finishing more than 76 points ahead at the top of the 18-strong field.

It was also noticeable both athletes failed to nail their most difficult dive, the forward four-and-a-half somersault which comes with a tariff of 3.7.

After a poor start which saw him end the first round in 17th, 17-year-old Daley was steady and finished with 467.80 points.

He said: "Our main aim was to come here and get our Olympic berths and we have got two with our performance. It feels great to have secured them and know that we've got two places for next year.

"Some of my dives went well and some could go better, and I'm going to go into the final and give it all I've got and aim for more consistency.

"If I land all my dives well in the final who knows what could happen, but the Chinese have been good today and they are tough to beat on home soil - but I'll give it 100% with my dives."

Waterfield had needed painkilling injections before this morning's prelims after bruising the bones in his wrists, although the 30-year-old chose not to repeat them before the semi-final because of the pain of the injection.

It had affected his first dive earlier which started in a handstand position, being unable to push off with enough strength and spring, and eventually he scraped through in 17th.

However, Waterfield overcame this in the second session and he finished 15pts behind Daley.
