Dallaglio injury fear

Lawrence Dallaglio is facing an anxious wait to see if he is fit to play Scotland on Saturday.

The England captain admitted he is concerned about a swollen right hand which may need an X-ray following yesterday's RBS Six Nations destruction of Italy in Rome.

Dallaglio's hand was caught by a boot in a ruck and needed to be heavily strapped after the 50-9 victory.

The Wasps captain took over as England skipper for the Italy game from the retired Martin Johnson and is desperate to lead the team out at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Dallaglio said: 'Someone landed on my hand very heavily. It is swollen and I will have to wait until that comes down. If the swelling doesn't recede I'll have to think about an X-ray to make sure everything is okay with the hand.

'I was very pleased with our performance. We haven't had the best preparation but we came together quickly and won away to set a new standard, post-World Cup.'

Dallaglio was praised by head coach Clive Woodward for guiding England, who scored seven tries, past the Italians.

Woodward said: 'Lawrence did a fantastic job. It is a massive job that he has taken on after Martin Johnson but his captaincy and work during the week was a huge plus for the whole team.'

Richard Hill, who put in another tireless performance in Rome, had his right thumb strapped after receiving a blow on the hand early in the game and also needed treatment to his right shoulder.

England have delayed naming their team to face Scotland until tomorrow morning to assess injuries after a very physical encounter.

Italy coach John Kirwan also praised England. 'When you play the world champions, every mistake is punished," he said. "It was a fantastically disciplined performance - that is why they are world champions. They were able to play like that even without Jonny Wilkinson and Johnson.'
