Daly sticks with it despite injury

13 April 2012

Former Open champion John Daly, who used superglue to repair a hand injury earlier this week, stuck to his task superbly in the first round of the Dutch Open today.

Daly went to the turn in 39, four over par, but improved on the back nine to card a level-par 70 at Hilversum.

After Daly felt pain in his hand last week, an X-ray revealed that a piece of glass had been embedded in a bone there for years.

The glass was removed but when the stitches came undone during practice Daly resorted to his own brand of repairs. The superglue had been supplemented with a large plaster when he teed off today.

"I could have it stitched again - but they would come out with the first shot, so I'll just leave it and have another scar," he said.

Germany's Tobias Dier fired 10 birdies to take the lead with a superb round of 10 under par.

That put him five shots ahead of Holland's Chris Van Der Velde, England's David Gilford and Ronan Rafferty of Northern Ireland.
